Trippy Travel Photo #11: Torah Reading Room, Masada, Israel

TT Photo

Ready to play the Trippy Travel Photo Game? It’s easy! Just…

1. Look at the Photo

Study it carefully…notice the details!

2. Guess what/where!

Try your best to answer these questions:

What is it?
Where was I traveling when I saw it?
What was the purpose of this place or thing?

(If you have no idea, it’s OK to make up silly answers. That’s fun, too!)

3. Check back later!

–Post your guesses here in the Comments Section (tweets don’t count–sorry)

–Keep checking and guessing as the guessing gets good…

-See who won…maybe it will be you!

I will admit that I’ve zoomed in a bit to make this round of the game more challenging. I promise I’ll include other shots (that provide the big picture) once the guesses are in–or if people are stumped.

The prize?

A mention of your name and a link to your site from within this post (which is good for Google/SEO, etc.)

The winners

A tie between Bob Crunch of Bluegreen Communities, with Martha Bergin of Gateway Community College
Location in Phoenix, AZ (@lapinageista on Twitter) as runner-up. When their guesses included forts, sand, etc, they were extremely warm and practically there! I must say that I’m impressed, too, since this was the most difficult round of this game so far (I promise it will be easier next time!) :)

The answer–Torah Reading Room: Masada, Israel

Masada, which means “fortress” in Hebrew, is located on a cliff overlooking the Dead Sea. It is the site where the Great Jewish Rebellion against Rome took place in 74 CE. According to some sources, as many as 1000 Jewish defenders decided to burn the fortress and end their own lives versus being taken alive. The photo (above) is of the shadows on the sandy floor of the “Torah reading room”. The larger photo below shows the room from a wider perspective.

Can’t get enough?

Here are all of the Trippy Travel photos, guesses and winners–all on one page.

Okay. Obviously it is a rug. It must have been somewhere in the Middle East so I’ll guess Jordan, and the purpose of it is…to be a rug! To get an extra point, I think it was made by Bedouins :)

Hey there! You’re right about it being in the Middle East. Not Jordan, however. And not a rug! But you’re warm somehow. And no Bedouin involvement, either.

Great guess…hope my clues help you nail it! :) PS: I think you’ll be surprised when I reveal the answer…

Gosh, I guess I will be surprised. I really thought I had it, especially after you said I had the best chance of guessing. I was thinking it must be Israel until I decided it was Bedouin. There’s Bedouins here but I figured there must be more in Jordan. Oh, well, shows what I know – not much!

Ooh…wait a minute. Now you’re on the right track. Israel is correct!!! And I’ll bet that you’ve been to this particular place, too. In fact, I’d bet many shekels that you have! :)

PS: I love the fact that you thought it was a rug. That means it’s definitely a ‘trippy travel pic’ as the visual lines have been blurred!

lol, to me I thought it was a roof, but then one must remember I was on the islands with the Kuna :)

Funny! I could see how you could think it’s a roof as a) it looks like one in some strange way and b) we had leaky ones there in San Blas! Hint: Maybe it’s the opposite of a roof….hmmm.

It kind of looks like a gutter but I know it must be something different – close-up shot of a sweater, maybe? :P

Hi and thanks for playing! Good guess, but…no–(buzzer sound)–not quite! Let me give you a hint. It (the place) is pretty high up. Does that help? And it’s in Israel. :)

It’s shadows on sand. Must be at the beach? Or possibly near water? The shadow is from some type of metal grid walkway or something similar to that. Perhaps a fence of some type would cast a similar shadow, but I really think it’s a walkway. That’s why I think it’s near water, because people are walking up on the walkway, away from the sand and whatever else is there.

Hi Martha–long time no see! Thanks for playing the game. You are now officially in 1st place! Why? Because of the ‘shadows on the sand’ guess. They’re actually shadows on dirty sand or sandy dirt (or dirt with some sand in it)! It’s not a walkway, however. But the shadows are from something that has the very pattern you see in the photo. So now, let’s review the clues:

      Israel
      Hot
      High
      Shadows on sand
      ???

I think someone’s going to get this one soon–perhaps it will be you? :)

Ah! Perhaps the shadows of some type of broadcasting or microwave tower, antenna or dish?

Good guess, Martha–but your last one was much warmer. Check out the comment after yours–from Blue Green Communities–and it might lead you to the answer!

It looks like the shadow of a fort in the sand, but from your clues, I’m going to guess the walls of Jerusalem or something else in Jerusalem.

Hi, Bob. Great guess! And know what? You’re now in first place. Here’s what you guessed that put you closest to the actual place/site:

Jerusalem–not in it, but near it
      ‘Shadow of fort or something’–yup!

I think you’re on the verge of getting it–and winning. Good luck!!

Yowzers, sounds like a “you had to be there” thing to figure out what’s casting the shadow. Maybe not. But I’ve never been there, and after a couple of fruitless image searches in Google, I decided I’m too lazy to continue! (To thine own self be true! : )

Martha–Hi and thanks for playing! I realize now that by zooming in too much, I may have made it too difficult. :( So I may just call a winner. Next time, it will be a bit easier. I promise! :)

Hi, Martha–yes, a winner! :) I’m really glad you played and I was impressed with your guesses. Amazing how close you could get to to the answer with my very close-up photo that only showed one small portion of the ‘room.’ Best wishes to you, too!

That must be some kind of sand rippling. No clue where it is though. All I know is that it is visually appealing.
