The Treasury—Petra, Jordan (Photo of the Day)

Petra Treasury Photo

Today’s photo is of the ancient/lost city of Petra—specifically, the Treasury, aka, Al Khazhneh. Even if you haven’t been to see it in Jordan, chances are you recognized the unique rust/peach-colored sandstone structure pretty quickly. It’s appeared in quite a few Hollywood movies and is famous for its use in the film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

What Petra Means

Petra, which means “stone” in Greek and Arabic, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has been since the 1980s and is one of the highlights of any trip to Jordan. I enjoyed it when I was there—what a fascinating place to visit! But I must say it was oppressively hot on that particular day (it was in the summer and in low season). I went through three large bottles of water in a matter of hours.

Who/Why

The Nabataeans, a nomadic people, arrived in southern Jordan around the 6th Century BC and Petra and settled the area and eventually carved Petra out of the sandstone cliffs.

Of all the structures in the lost city of Petra, the Treasury is one of the most elaborate.  No one is 100% sure why or exactly when it was built, but some say it was between 100 BC and AD 200.

Your Thoughts/Experiences?

Have you been to Petra? If so, what was it like for you? What time of year did you go? Hopefully, it wasn’t as hot as it was when I was there.

If you haven’t been there, Would you like to go? What impression does the photo give you?

Do you enjoy visiting historical/archaeological sites? Do you have any favorites?

Ohhhh, that’s definitely on my bucket list of “places to go” and “must do’s” – one day we will get there….

Even though it’s such a short distance from where we are in Cyprus, there always seems to be “somewhere else” to go! Aaarghhh!

Hi, Shell. Cool that it’s on your bucket list. I’m sure you’ll love it! And I hear you re: things seeming close, but being another place to go. It’s easy to become greedy. And funny, when I was planning my trip to Turkey, I’d considered Cyprus!

I was just there in December, and I have to say, it was the most fun I’ve ever had. I felt like I was on another planet.

I was there in January and as many times as I’ve seen the Treasury, it never does get old. I got there right when the gates opened at 6am and had the entire Treasury to myself! It was incredibly special!

Every time I see photos of Petra I suffer, I haven’t been and now I have other travel plans, but I’m so looking forward to get overwhelmed by that ancient city!

Hi, Angela. I hope you make it there–I’m sure you’ll enjoy it! But if you go to Jordan, I highly recommend a few nights over in Wadi Rum. As much as I liked Petra, I must say that I loved Wadi Rum more in some ways…

I too visited in the middle of summer and it was stinking hot. We went before the Indiana Jones film came out and spent some time trying to convince the men with horses to let us gallop up the siq on their steeds but they refused. Imagine my disgust when I saw that they let the big famous film actor do it!!
One day I shall get around to writing about my travels from way back then….

Hey, Naomi. Stinking hot is a good word for it! I wish I’d gotten there earlier in the morning and had two days, but…it just didn’t work out that way. Having said this, I’m glad I got to spend the time I did at Wadi Rum, which I absolutely loved.

So you went pre-Indiana Jones, huh? That’s cool. Must have been sort of trippy to see the movie after that. Those men should have allowed you to gallop up the siq…fools!! LOL

It was a bit trippy because NOONE had heard of Petra, and to get that first glimpse of the Treasury down the end of the siq, just like life as in the movie, was like; “I’ve been there!! Ha ha it doesn’t really go into the rock very far”. And then he ruined it for me by bloody galloping off into the sunset like we couldn’t. LOL
