Located in the ancient kingdoms of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, the Lotus Pond, or Nelum Pokuna, is a unique site dating back to the 1st-4th century BC. This architectural gem features a stunning lotus flower design, with concentric tiers that resemble blooming petals, showcasing the advanced craftsmanship of its creators.
Originally serving as bathing and water gathering sites, these ponds were essential for both monks and royalty. The Lotus Pond exemplifies the harmonious blend of beauty and functionality in ancient Sri Lankan architecture, reflecting the sophisticated water management systems of the time.
Today, the Lotus Pond continues to attract visitors, like myself, making it a perfect spot for a trippy travel photo.
How’d I end up there?
I was on a 5-week backpacking trip in Sri Lanka. The ancient kingdoms of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa were of interest to me, so I spent time visiting there.
Back when this was a guessing game…
