“You’ve got to try the fish tacos in Todos Santos,” a friend of mine told me. “They’re incredible!” I decided to take her advice and sure enough, she was right.

When I arrived in the town, I asked some of the locals where to go. They all seemed to point at the same stand right on the street. The prices were excellent–maybe a dollar for one? And so, I ordered two. I was not disappointed. In fact, for the rest of my time in Baja California, I went out of my way to order fish and seafood tacos. I tried shrimp, scallop, dorado and many others kinds. All were good.

Colorful and Wonderful

But the ones in this particular photo were the best. They were colorful, with purple onion, bright red tomatoes and green cilantro, all of which made them visually appealing. And they were also wonderful–super delicious.  Rico, as they say in Spanish.

What was it about them?

I think it’s the combination of flavors (the fish, the condiments, spicy salsa, creamy toppings) and the textures (soft, crunchy, etc.). In the end, I enjoyed them even more than some of the meat tacos that I originally thought were so good.

What made these tacos especially satisfying is that it was my first time eating them…ever. That’s right–I’ve been to Mexico more than a few times and was definitely in coastal areas where the fish is fresh, but never tried a fish taco. Not sure why I skipped them.

I do know this–I will make a point of getting them when I’m in Mexico in the future. And if/when I return to Baja, I’ll surely revisit Todos Santos for the great tacos (and other food).
