Today’s photo is of ‘Nandi,’ Lord Shiva’s/Siva’s holy cow and vehicle, found inside one of the temples (Candi Nandi) at Prambanan, the largest Hindu temple complex in Indonesia, which was built in the 10th century.

Most Shiva temples have this bull, which is both sacred and protective; it is considered a guard and gatekeeper. According to Hindu Blog, Nandi is a disciplined bull, one that “symbolizes Dharma, an image of controlled power.” Lord Shiva, the destroyer, is one of the ‘Trimurti’ or trinity in Hinduism. The other two gods are Brahma and Vishnu.

Reactions/Thoughts/Experiences?

Have you been to Prambanan in Indonesia? If so, what did you think?

Would you like to see a complete photo essay on Prambanan?

I’m planning one–all of which I shot using the ‘dramatic tone’ art filter on my camera. I think it will make for a pretty cool photo journey!

Can’t Get Enough?

Want to see more photos from around the world? Here are the other ‘photos of the day‘ (people, places and things) from several continents. Enjoy!

About the bus

Originally a blog about travel, chickybus now also covers lifestyle. It’s still a ‘bus,’ but it now takes you on other types of ‘rides.’

Like the experience so far, consider a ride on the ‘magic carpet’: my memoir about travel off the beaten path and into the moment.
