This mystery of this photo–of a ‘water apple’ in the Dominican Republic–was successfully solved by a woman named Helene. To win the game, she followed these steps…

1. Look at the Photo/Study the Details

3. Answer both of these questions

What is it that you see in the photo? Be careful. You could easily think it’s a ________ when it’s actually a ___________.

Where was I traveling when I saw it?

(If you have no idea, it’s OK to make up silly answers. That’s fun, too!)

3. Check back later!

–Post your guesses here in the Comments Section (tweets and FB comments don’t count–sorry)

–Keep checking and guessing as the guessing gets good…

–See who won…maybe it will be you!

The prize?

A mention of your name and a link to your site from within this post.

And the winner is…

A woman named Helene (see comments below.)

The answer: ‘Water Apple,’ Dominican Republic

This is a photo of a water apple–aka, syzygium samarangense–which I had the pleasure of photographing and eating while in Mao Valverde in the Dominican Republic this past winter. My friend’s mom said it’s a rare tree–one that’s not indigenous to the area. When I looked into it, I learned that it goes by man names–wax apple, love apple, java apple, royal apple, bellfruit, Jamaican apple, water apple, mountain apple, cloud apple, wax jambu, rose apple, and bell fruit–and that it’s a plant species found in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Samoa, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

I’m not sure how it ended up in the DR, but..it does seem the perfect climate for it.

It’s a wonderful fruit–not too sweet, but tasty. I liked it because it didn’t seem to cause a spike in my blood sugar; also, it was pretty. The shade of read is rather intense.

Here’s a link to more information about the water apple.

Can’t get enough?

Like this game? Enjoy learning about new places? Here are all of the Trippy Travel Photos–guesses and winners–all on one page. Each one is unique and educates you about something interesting somewhere around the world!
