I visited Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, the Spanish fortress in Cartagena, Colombia, during a day tour–and I really enjoyed my time there. It was a fascinating place to visit and photograph.

After the tour, as I was walking away, I noticed how the Colombian flag was blowing in the wind over the castle and it caught my eye. After several attempts, I was able to capture the flag, flattened out for just a few seconds, for this photo.

Built by the Spanish during the colonial era (in 1536), the fortress is in a strategic location, overlooking the bay and the city. The purpose was to defend ships that contained goods taken by the conquistadores and protect the city from pirates and English warships.

The castle, constructed by slaves, has special tunnels that made noise reverberate all the way through them, which mean that enemies could be heard long before they were seen. I walked through one of these as part of the tour.

If you visit Cartagena, I highly recommend visiting the Castillo San Felipe de Barajas.

Your Thoughts?

Do you enjoy visiting castles/fortresses? If so, which one is your favorite and why?
