This photo–of the sun rising over Niagara Falls–is one of which I’m proud. Sure, it’s pretty, but the fact that I woke up early enough to catch it (before 6 a.m.) is a big deal.
Seriously? The falls themselves are pretty darn impressive…
I was just lucky enough to wake up in time to enjoy this view and to snap some photos. Once the sun had risen, I went back to sleep. After 12 hours on an Amtrak train the day before, I was a bit worn out.
5 Quick Facts Re: Niagara Falls
…There are actually 3 falls in Niagara: the American Falls, the Bridal Veil Falls and the Horseshoe Falls.
…The largest vertical drop is over 165 feet (50 metres).
…The Niagara Falls were created by glacier activity around 10,000 years ago.
…The Niagara River, the natural outlet from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario, is about 58 kilometres (36 mi.) in length.
…Niagara is not technically the highest waterfall in the world, but it is the widest and largest. According to the website, Niagara Parks, about 500 other waterfalls in the world are ‘taller’ than Niagara. The Angel Falls in Venezuela is the tallest at 979 metres (3,212 ft.). However, some of the tallest falls in the world have very little water flowing over them.
“It’s the combination of height and volume that makes Niagara Falls so beautiful,” says Niagara Parks. I must say that I agree!

Your Thoughts/Reactions?
Just wondering…
Do you prefer the sunrise, sunset or both?
Which would you rather experience and/or photograph? And why?
I personally like both for different reasons.
To me, the sunrise is a little more mysterious because you don’t know what the sky is going to do. It’s dark, then the sky lightens and then, you begin to get an idea of what’s next.
In the case of a sunset, you have some indication in advance because of the clouds that are already there.
Still, in neither case is there a guarantee that you will see the sun as a glowing sphere.
Perhaps that is what makes catching a perfect sunrise or sunset, if you’re lucky enough to, so special.

The Embassy Suites Niagara Falls Hotel, Canada, offered me and a fellow traveler a discounted media rate on our room for one night. We appreciated this, as well as the great view we had. Being in a room facing the falls undoubtedly made our stay in Niagara Falls more enjoyable.
